Whenever I clean house, I need other distractions. While some may be able to focus on the task at hand, I need something to make me forget that I'm doing something incredibly boring. And that I'm not doing something redundant (because, seriously, it's going to be dirty the next day anyway).
During my room and the living room, I watch Netflix. However, it had to be shows that I've already seen, due to the fact that when I see something new, I have to pay attention to what's going on. I can't stand not understanding what happened. I refuse to watch a show I've never seen midway through (unless it's something pointless, like reality television). It's like reading the last page of a good book.
It's almost ironic that I enjoy Quentin Tarantino.
However, I can't enjoy movies in the kitchen. The television is too small if I'm far away, and there's nothing ever on the movie channels (I can't stand commercials, either).
That's when I remembered that Dish had CD channels.
Now, I'm also going to say I don't enjoy radio stations (I used to be a small-time DJ at school, but it wasn't anything to write home about--fun, but no one listened to me, I'm sure). I don't like the same music is played over and over again. I usually enjoy the CD channels on Dish because they play the songs people forget.
I was clicking through the channels, trying to catch my ear on something interesting when music that I would only hear while in a garden party at an Icelander's house (true story) came on.
Martini Time.
That's the name of the channel.
Pure genius.
I can't quite explain the exhilaration of washing dishes to this music. It's like I'm in a pastel dress, my hair up in a smooth bun, serving margaritas when I'm really elbow deep in sudsy water.
There's just something fun and slightly romantic cleaning to Frank Sinatra and Keely Smith sing Nothing in Common. Or hearing Bobby Darin croon Call Me Irresponsible.
Cleaning as never felt so sexy. As domestic as it sounds.
Fun Fact: My Iceland friend claims to be the best Elvis impersonator. When we went to Las Vegas, we only ran into one impersonator at a wedding chapel--sadly, the Icelander won.

Fainting Optional
Anyone like Coheed & Cambria? Anyone understand how wonderfultistic they happen to be, between their lyrics, storytelling and fantabulous riffs? Anyone understand why it's a need to see this?
How freaking awesome. Seriously. I would be blessed if I could not only get the time off, but to use that time for the good of my soul to see that concert. Four days. All four albums. I'd be on a music high for ages.
If-in you need to hear they're stuff, try their Myspace, their website (it plays near the bottom of the page) or, as I always say, buy their album. It's so good, you'll finally realize what your soul was missing.
It's Rock Opera. And they've also got comic books out (with other apparel). It's just... so good. Even my fish, Cornelius, loves when I play the CDs for his little fishy fins to hear.
Cornelius doesn't lie.
Go. Watch goodness unfold.
Guess you know what Mallory will be listening to for the next weeks times twelve. To the billionth power.
Random Fact: The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue.

Over Achiever
I spent a good quality of time on a self evaluation for my Resident Assistant position, taking it seriously and really writing about how I did and what I feel I should work on. About 5:30am last night, with only seven questions left, I decided I needed to get some sleep, though I had started the process at about 11pm.
I slept, got up and started working at the front desk at 10am-12pm, in which my time was spent talking with my next year Hall Director and our newest RA, who's been around less than a week.
I then spent another hour an a half finishing the questions up. When I picked up my printed copy from downstairs, the front desk worker had set it aside. "How'd you know?" I asked, basically teasing because that meant she had read what I'd printed out to see that it was more of an "RA's eyes only" material.
"Oh, Dan had printed his out just before you."
I picked mine up and saw that Dan's was significantly... shorter than mine. He had two pages. While I had six.
Thinking he had skirted the issue, I said, "Make fun of him when he picks it up!"
I met up with Russell and asked him how long his was. His was two pages.
When I got to the meeting, I found that I was the one who had gone over and above what I needed to do, and I was the one teased. People were wondering what the hell I had to say about myself, and all I could think about was how I had actually really wanted to make sure I got the questions right, looking up "Work Ethic" and wondered the full meaning of "Give a detailed example of how you have served as an advocate in resolving a conflict."
The more I think about it, the more I wondered. At first, I felt the fool. I was the only one really taking it seriously, a paragraph for each question and still wondering if that was enough. Yet most of the questions answered had perhaps two sentences. I had many for "Describe your administrative style. Specifically include completing check-in/out procedures, room transfer process, meeting deadlines, facilitating floor meetings, etc." I mean, it seemed tedious, but I wrote it all out. And the last question, I had three paragraphs.
It could be looking too far into things, but this is the point that I realize I look at things differently from people (and perhaps don't listen well enough for my own good). Out of nine other RAs, I was the only one to go that far. I'm not saying that the other's didn't evaluate themselves--I'm sure they did a fine job, especially since some of the RAs had done this multiple times before.
Maybe this means I'm too critical of myself.
Maybe this means I like talking about myself too much.
Maybe this means I find too many things meaningful and worthwhile.
Probably all of the above.
All I know is that I could have spent most of that time doing a different paper. Or at least some more sleep.
I'm re-reading Letters From A Skeptic. I only got halfway through last time. I don't agree with everything being said, but it's nice to see a good conversation about Christianity for a change. No one is as open-minded as we think we are--me especially.
Some good music:
Magic In The Air: Badly Drawn Boy
Parade of Punk Rock T-shirts: Maritime
3 Feet Tall: I Am Kloot
Cold As Minnesota: Math & Physics Club
Nights of the Living Dead: Tilly & The Wall
Postcards From Italy: Beirut
What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades?: Beulah
Disposable Parts: Enon
You Wouldn't Like Me: Tegan & Sara
Random Fact: New Zealand is home to 4 million people and 70 million sheep.

Add To The List
You know what sound can go in the "Punch A Baby" bin?
The sound that started around 6am, of a truck using his backup beep every five seconds for ten second increments. The sound makes me want to throw many things out a window.
A first born.
Crayons.
An HDTV.
Of course, this is only with the knowledge that it would be hitting said device, if only to get it to shut up. It's like someone picked out the most annoying alarm clock in the universe and couldn't figure out how to properly turn it off. And if he can't figure it out, I'll destroy it so it doesn't matter.
Of course, this could also be because I'm crazy tired from staying up late last night. I did get a lot done, but not half as much as I wanted. What I normally have to do is tedious, which is why I put it off... But the tedious work takes time. That's why it's defined as tedious.
The snow today, as expected, is melting like the face of Toht in Raiders of the Lost Arc. Every five seconds or so the snow falls from the roof and splats the ground in a pleasing way--meaning, I hope spring will finally start because I miss being outside and laying on the grass without freezing and getting wet.
We needed the snow, though. Apparently, a foot of snow is an inch of rain. And we need every inch we can get to really bring in the greenery. Maybe, by the end of the week, I can have a picnic. Here's hoping!

Since Mandikat can't talk for at least another week, as requested, she had recorded some songs to send to me when I'm feeling down. Just click on the above or go here to listen to it. There's another called Red Red Robin that you can listen to on the "View More" portion. She may upload more, as well.
Some days, I can't explain how blessed I am to have her as my friend. I can't wait to see her this upcoming weekend. It'll be a relief and relaxing. I know it's selfish, but I've been craving a relationship that has no hardships at the moment, so I'm going to take the time for all it's worth!

Still Snowing
Everyone is talking about it, but the main fact is: it's been snowing since 10pm last night.
I've been enjoying every second of it, actually. Though I was a bit miffed last night (I went out in dry weather in flip-flops, had to leave trudging through snow back), I love it. It's perfect weather for snowball fights, snowpeople making and also a reason to stick around at friends' houses just to chat or play video games.
I finally got my door decks up:

I really went the distance, but I like how they turned out. Since I'd put so much work into them, I ended up laminating. No qualms, though.
I still have ages of work to do, that I amazingly am able to put off without mentally going crazy.
I helped out Traci on a project for class (easy 30 second commercial). I was just in the shots, but I called in Spooner and my old RA, Andy, as she wanted some more boys to be involved. I was just going to go home afterwards, but then we ended up talking and I went over to Spooner's with Andy to play some 64, then to Crap-mart to pick up some yarn (beer on their part).
I plan on making his mittens soon enough, but I really should stop procrastinating at some point to get done with Self-Evaluations for the RA position, writing a paper and thinking up my next bulletin board for my floor. I also want to double check my stuff for my summer RA position, talk with them and see how they like what I have to offer.
I hate the end of the year. There is always way too much stress, emotionally and physically. I lose sleep thinking and doing projects. And when I'm thinking, I usually refuse to do any other material of work on school because I'm too distracted anyway. Thus, my day hours increase whilst my sleep hours diminish.
If I don't get the summer RA/anything position, I'm on the debate of what to do. I've had more than enough offers to live. As much as I'd love to be home, I don't think I'd be happy with any job. I'm really pushing my egg basket at this double job at the dorms and Gamestop.
The snow is just amazing, though. Most of the time, when I look out my window, I can't see past two inches. A lot of people are hoping for school to be off tomorrow (ha!), but I think that it won't be so bad. Unless it's still snowing, warm weather will come in and melt it hardcore. Minnesota weather is just nuts.
Gotta love Motion City Soundtrack.

Away For More Than Ten Days
Well, I'm writing this to say that, indeed, I will be leaving for Australia in two days' time. Thus, since I don't want to drag my computer around (more like, I don't want it stolen and/or broken), I'm leaving behind technology to "see the world."
I'm slightly curious to see how I'll be doing. When it's around, I think that's my problem. I did well for that weekend at the BWCAW. Then again, that was a weekend. And with my father and brother. Barely anything.
So, I'll miss you all. Particularly my parents, since they're the devoted who come to this page over twice a day (I see you on my counter, you fools!). On that note, I keep getting hits on my 5th post, thanks to the beautiful photo of Link. I find it humorous because I got the link from somewhere else, which I link to. I'm laughing right now. Only a nerd would get why.
I love Barenaked Ladies. I can proudly say I own many of their CDs now. I like their sound and their humor... Perhaps music hasn't taken a fall at all. There are very few musicians who would take the time anymore.
I have to say, doesn't this remind anyone of Psychonauts, during their Lungfish Raid? except for the fire coming out of the mouth. Instead of that, they have PSI-beam. Not saying that it's a bad thing. I just found it more hilarious that way, because who doesn't wish that they could be just like that? Even if for only a minute?
Ah, the beauty of video games. Well, most.
I'm trying to keep you guys busy since I'll be gone. And I'll probably be too bored to give step-by-step actions of what I did. Maybe I'll post the story I have to make of it for my Travel Writing class? Who knows. NEXT.
Oh, here's an interesting blog to read, if you're a blog reader to the max. Ever-so-often, I'll make my way over to see what someone younger than me thinks of the world (I say younger because she is up to four years younger than me, I believe). She's got the head start of wanting to be a writer, rather than me, who tossed between that and theatre and video games. Choices, choices.
You know what I realized? I get Miss Flow by the end of my trip. Oh, I'll be a happy camper...
You know what I like best about being a DJ? I can play anything I really want. Always a bonus.
Um... In the mood to download FREE comics, yet the contributors still get paid? Go here. Wonderful site. Seriously. It's comics, books... If anything, just check it out, there's no harm there. And you know you have free time. You're reading this for gods sake. You can upload five a day. Which is more than enough. Plus, the comic I mentioned a while back is now on there, in color! The only setback is that if you aren't from the United States of America, then you won't be able to get an account. Perhaps, one day, they will realize that unity is great. Until then, sorry guys.
We're renting vehicles in Australia to save time. I'm nervous guys.
Alright. I'm sure this is getting long and boring.
Random Fact: If a car is travelling at 55 miles per hour it will travel 56 feet before the driver can shift his foot from the accelerator to the brake.

For Ears Only
I adore music. I wrote about it in the previous blog, but it's so much more than making video games or movies or my favorite Anime.
It affects us all, no matter what you say. It can make or break a day. I woke up to Good Time and was inspired to have a good day. I listened to Fruits Basket music and I get this warm happy/sad feeling, one that tells me everything will be okay and yet it won't.
Miyazaki's film music seems to soar through my soul. And that's what music is supposed to do for every individual. Make the soul do something fantastic. There shouldn't be a reason why not to sing aloud, whether the voice of an angel or sounding like a broken gear inside a watch. Who cares if you sound like a dirty, rusted pipe from an old pipe? Whatever makes you tick is what makes the beauty.
It's for fun. It's for truth. And let's not forget about talent.
So, I suppose this could be considered an apology. For getting emotional over a song for no apparent reason. For singing along to anything I know the lyrics to and the ones I don't.
I just like music.
Random Fact: It was at a concert in Minneapolis in 1954 that Al Dvorin first closed Elvis's concerts with: "Ladies and Gentleman, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and good night."

Lightbulbs
I have just recently discovered that Photoshop is on the computers nearby my dorm.
Suddenly, everything has become twenty times more interesting.
In less interesting news, I'm excited to show Kiwis Motion City Soundtrack, Dane Cook and a little Brian Regan. I'm surprised that Dane Cook hasn't spread like wild fire over here, but, then again, they may not have the same humor perspective; they did have a comedy tour, though. Hm. Anyway, you need to buy his new DVD. He's a funny cat.
Otherwise, I'm addicted to Heroes.
It all started with their first episode, but I wasn't able to watch it because of work and school and then the lack of television by the end of the year. Now, though. I have seen episodes.
I'll say right here that there could be spoilers, considering there are a few things I want to get off my chest...
What in the hell is up with freaking Nathan?! I didn't like him from the beginning (Peter lover *raises hand*), and he's always trying to "protect" but really just comes off as a jerk, plus a greedy brut. He cheated on his wife, has an illegitamate child that he sends off, and crashes every dream anyone else has! He's only reliable with himself. UGH!
Favorite Character: Hiro. Who doesn't love this fantastic character? He's exactly how I'd be if I found I'd had powers. Loyal and completely a hero to the end. He's a little sweetie and never loses sight of the important. He's probably the only one who's not fucked up. Besides Claire. But she's sixteen. By default, she's fucked up.
As it is, I love the show if only because I want answers. That's how to get me hooked, people. Slighted information. That's why I like Lost. They just keep throwing things in until there's a point of one screaming, "Just tell me what the hell is going on!"
It's nice to watch a show without commercials.
Random Fact: More than ten people a year are killed by vending machines. (That's what the Transformer movie is about, I'll bet. Now I'm interested in watching it.)

Figures
As it seems, when I decided to go to New Zealand, my favorite bands decides to go on tour. And guess where they're ending up? In St. Paul in September.
Who freaking planned this trip again?
Oh, right. Me.
It's really not that big of a deal. I just kinda wish I were able to be in Minnesota when they do their first play there. Especially since I know everyone is going to be there. Right?. I said, RIGHT.
They have a new video for The Stray which is more than cute. I've liked this band since the beginning. It's amazing to watch them grow. Pretty soon, in a store near you, you'll see them for sale. I'm surprised they don't have a label yet. Unless they're going for their own. Which would be more than freaking sweet.
Besides this is my suitcase, I've been listening to Alanis Morissette. And Toadies. And Anime music. And Mika. And Zibra Zibra.
....
this is my suitcase? Could you maybe stop by New Zealand? >^_^<

Three Girls, Two Cats And A Wii
That's pretty much what my apartment is made up of. Oh, and a comfy bed, huge bathroom and room mates who actually hang around and talk. It kind of reminds me of the time when my family moved this summer. Suddenly, all of the neighbors were coming over with brownies and saying hello, while I was creeped out by the whole business because the only neighbors I'd ever remembered tended to ignore us.
As it is, I'm proud to say that I'm now getting full rest, since I don't have to go all over the world to get internet somehow. It's sad for you, I know, that I'm not able to update (yeah, right), but it's odd to say that once I got internet, after being so used to being without it, I felt like I didn't have much to say anymore. I'm sure I'll break that within a few days.
Yesterday, I fixed my glasses, in which a screw had been lost in the airport in Minneapolis. Getting back from Vegas took it's toll on all of us, getting back around the three-thirty AM. I also got my Definitely Dead book in paperback, wanting to keep the series in the same state, only to realize that the next book, All Together Dead, is coming next month and I'll have to wait a whole year for it to come out on paperback... again. Damn! I only have to pay about five bucks with my discount for a paperback, but I really want that book! My Vampire Humor needs it's constant fix.
Also, during class to find a good Author Blog, I came across this. I think my favorite part is the wanted poster, if only because it says the reward is not only 100,000 bucks, but you can keep the blubber. Well, gee, thanks Mr. Openshaw! I have multiple uses for blubber!
As I'm sure some of you have heard, there's been a leak. I've been told that Bungie caught the guy who did it; he's been ripped away from playing the beta and Xbox live. I winced. If that isn't pain to the heart, I don't know what is. I'm not even sure if it was worth it. I mean, think about it. May 16th isn't that far away. Suck it up, brag about knowing all about it and make us suffer, rather than having to officially wait until November to play it. Though, I'm not complaining. It looks pretty fancy. I guess I misunderstood the way the bubble shield worked, though. It doesn't really move, only if it's down a hill or something. I kind of hoped it would follow around or something. Ah, well. Just another challenge to work around. Everything needs a balance.
Listening to this is my suitcase just brings back hope for good music to actually be on the radio; there's a reason why I rarely turn it on. People like Ashley and Zibra Zibra should be on more often. I'd be more amused and I don't think I'd be as sick of people doing the same thing over and over again. There's that one line that says "If it's working, why fix it?" But I don't care. Just because it's working doesn't mean that it's good.
As it is, I'm hungry. I also am in the mood for some Scrubs.
